In terms of the group buying industry, South Africa is a prime country for growth. Any online business will attest to the fact that Internet penetration and online purchasers and buyers are always on the increase.
With data prices and ADSL costs plummeting (though still high), South Africa is ripe for exploiting the large numbers of new customers perusing the web.
Group buying in particular is an industry reliant on being successful online. While the numbers are all on the up, there are still few online users when compared to the total population of South Africa. Also, the amount of Internet users from mobile devices is astonishingly high, yet this market is quite untapped, since most of those using it do not have a credit card with which to purchase daily deals. Apparently, though, debit cards will soon be accepted online as a form of payment, something which is currently greatly hindering the online eCommerce arena.
Some have mentioned that group buying is not here to stay and that it is mostly hype. While the industry is young and may take a dip, there is no questioning the fact that people will always be attracted by a good deal.
